The Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is a shoe that proves a “gravel” shoe doesn’t have to be clunky or overly rugged. It’s a model that’s closer to a road training shoe than a feisty trail shoe, yet it handles gravel with ease. It doesn’t offer maximum cushioning or aggressive grip, but that’s exactly why running in it feels faster and more natural. The only question is, do you really need more for most of your routes?

Purpose
The Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is a lightweight, well-cushioned running shoe designed for light trail running. It performs best on a mix of road and easy gravel, where you don’t need an aggressive outsole or a high stack height. This model is for runners who combine city runs with casual outings outside the city but still want to maintain pace and lightness. The Blaze 3 GRVL allows you to switch surfaces smoothly, but it does so in a way that feels more like running on road than on trails.

- stable, comfortable landing
- versatile outsole with 2.5-millimeter lugs

Salomon Running Shoes – lineup
Salomon’s running shoe lineup includes a wide variety of trail models, as well as several urban and gravel shoes. The urban shoes prioritize cushioning and a smooth ride on hard surfaces, while the gravel shoes add a more aggressive outsole that performs well on loose gravel and compacted trails. The Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL falls into the latter category but isn’t at the top of it. At the top is the Aero Glide 4 GRVL, which is the most cushioned shoe in this segment. The Blaze 3 GRVL offers less cushioning but is lighter, provides better ground feel, and lets you run a bit faster on easy terrain.
You can find more about Salomon’s urban running shoes in this shoe guide. However, if you’d like to head off-road, you’ll find more about Salomon’s trail shoes here.

Role in the Running Shoe Rotation
The Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is, by nature, a middle-of-the-road shoe. It’s a very comfortable and versatile option between models like the Aero Glide 4, which handles all the longest and paved miles – including the faster ones. The Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is a “workhorse” that provides comfort and stability on mixed terrain. In contrast, the Ultra Glide 4 steps in where the terrain gets really tough, providing protection on technical trails. This allows you to choose the right shoe for where you plan to run that day. Additionally, you can choose between cushioning, versatility, and traction.

Similar to Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL
The concept of hybrid shoes that combine road and trail running isn’t new. However, Salomon was the first to call this shoe “gravel shoe.” It’s still a young but growing segment of the running market that’s trying to sensibly combine two worlds. On one hand, you get the comfort familiar from road models. On the other, there’s an outsole with a subtle tread pattern that provides confidence on gravel, park trails, or packed dirt. Each of these models is a compromise between these two worlds.

Soft, but Without a “Couch-Like” Feel
In the Aero Blaze 3 GRVL, the sole is based on optiFOAM2 foam made of TPU. This is the same type of foam found in the better-cushioned Aero Glide 4 GRVL. Here, there is slightly less of it. The shoe has a heel height of 35 millimeters and a forefoot height of 27 millimeters. These are fairly standard – if not average – values in today’s running shoe market. This also defines the shoe’s purpose – it’s not a model for mindlessly clocking long miles in a soft, cushioned style.
The lower heel height provides a more direct feel for the ground and a distinctly lighter, less “couch-like” character. The cushioning is good and soft. It feels closer to everyday running shoes than to those with maximum cushioning. Thanks to this, it offers better performance and significantly greater stability.
This level of cushioning makes it a shoe for runners weighing up to 90 kilograms. And for those who prefer this less “couch-like” character in running shoes. For heavier runners, the Aero Glide 4 GRVL will be much more suitable.
The Blaze 3 GRVL also features Reverse Camber, a contouring design intended to improve the shoe’s roll from heel to toe. However, these effects are subtle. They’re more of a gentle aid in maintaining your rhythm than a cradle-like effect that does the work for you. Thanks to this, the shoe feels neutral and doesn’t dictate your running style – if anything happens here, it’s mainly thanks to your legs.

Gravel Without Any Trouble, Road With Ease
The Blaze 3 GRVL features an outsole based on the Gravel ContaGRIP in its gravel version. The outsole pattern is very similar, if not identical, to that used on the Aero Glide 4 GRVL. The outsole is of medium height, with lugs up to 2.5 millimeters deep and fairly densely spaced. This tread pattern works well on gravel, compacted dirt, and roads. On hard surfaces, it performs very well and smoothly. It doesn’t get in the way or slow you down. In this regard, it resembles an urban outsole with deeper grooves more than a full-fledged trail sole – and that’s precisely where its appeal and magic lie.
This construction means the Blaze 3 GRVL feels most at home on gravel roads, park paths, and simple, non-technical trails. The more challenging the terrain, the more quickly its road roots become apparent – it lacks the aggression and “bite” needed to grip the ground. This is a shoe that doesn’t pretend to be a mountain beast, but rather sensibly expands your training options beyond the road.

Form-Fitting, Just Like Daily Trainer Style
The upper on the Blaze 3 GRVL is simple, fairly classic, and fits perfectly with its urban aesthetic. It’s made of lightweight, breathable mesh with standard breathability that conforms well to the foot. There’s just the right amount of room in the forefoot. In the midfoot area, the support, when laced properly, is optimal and secure. In terms of feel and fit, it’s closer to the comfort of urban shoes for everyday running than a tighter, trail-running fit.
Unlike its top-of-the-line sibling, the Glide 4 GRVL, the Blaze 3 GRVL does not feature a quick-lacing system but is equipped with standard laces. Additionally, the tongue is not integrated into the upper – which is also a simpler solution. But… for people with high arches, the lack of tongue integration can be helpful because it offers more room in the midfoot. It’s, as always, a trade-off.
At the back, the Blaze 3 GRVL also prioritizes simplicity and comfort over elaborate stiffeners. The heel counter is classic, moderately stiff, and features a moderate amount of internal padding. The heel counter, which isn’t dramatically stiff, holds the heel securely. There’s no aggressive stabilization here; everything works more naturally and less intrusively. The moderate amount of padding, combined with a more flexible heel counter, provides pleasant comfort. Again, this feels more like a comfortable road shoe than a technical trail shoe.

Lightweight, Whether on Trails or in the City
The Blaze 3 GRVL is lightweight – a typical men’s size weighs about 248 grams, while a women’s size weighs 204 grams. This makes them feel light and more dynamic right away, unlike heavier, more cushioned models. The weight is just right – neither overly minimalist nor “couch-bound.”
In my size, the Aero Blaze 3 GRVL weighs 279 grams, which is very light regardless of whether we compare it to urban or trail shoes. If we compare it to trail running shoes, it ranks among the 4% lightest models. If we use a shoe guide to compare it to urban shoes for everyday running, it ranks among… the 3% lightest models.

Final Thoughts
The Salomon Aero Blaze 3 GRVL is a shoe that proves lightweight gravel running can be enjoyable and accessible. It performs well on gravel, park paths, and easy forest trails, offering a natural feel for the ground, a smooth roll, and surprising lightness. If you’re looking for comfort without excessive cushioning or weight, the Blaze 3 is exactly what you need.
