Some new releases introduce just a few tweaks. Others change everything. The Wave Rider 30 definitely falls into the latter category. Mizuno has completely rebuilt its iconic model from the ground up, retaining only its name. With new geometry, a completely redesigned outsole, and a totally different approach to cushioning, this isn’t just another Rider. It’s a shoe that’s been created from scratch.

Mizuno Running Shoes – Lineup
The Mizuno Wave Rider 30 remains the most versatile training shoe in the brand’s lineup. Designed for everyday running, it combines high cushioning with good stability and a smooth roll. In the 30th generation, the producer has completely transformed its character by increasing the amount of foam and incorporating a full-length Wave plate. As a result, the Rider has become significantly more comfortable than its predecessors, without sacrificing the versatility for which the entire series is renowned.
In the hierarchy of Mizuno training shoes, the Wave Rider falls between the softer, maximum-cushioning Wave Sky model and more advanced constructions, such as the Neo Zen and Neo Vista, which offer greater performance and are also intended for faster workouts. The Rider remains the most versatile option – it’s perfect for both short, easy runs and building mileage on the weekends.

Role in the Running Shoe Rotation
Wave Rider 30 plays a fundamental role in a runner’s running shoe rotation. It’s the most relaxed and reliable model. It’s a shoe that handles high mileage, recovery runs, and regular running at a relaxed pace well. For slightly faster and more “lively” runs, the Neo Zen 2 works well – though this training model can also handle faster paces, so it doesn’t duplicate the Rider but provides a different stimulus for days when you want to run faster. Finally, for your fastest days and the strongest speed workouts, there’s a real rocket – the Hyperwarp Elite. These three pillars will ensure the right rotation of shoes depending on your workout for the day – you don’t have to do everything with just one model.

New Rider, New Cushioning Philosophy
The biggest revolution in the Wave Rider 30 is in the midsole. Mizuno has completely redesigned its construction, using two types of Enerzy NXT foam and, for the first time in the series’ history, a full-length Wave plate. The top layer is made of nitrogen-infused Mizuno Enerzy NXT foam, which provides softness and greater resilience. Beneath it lies a second layer of higher-density Enerzy NXT foam, designed to enhance stability and control the overall construction. This solution combines a high level of cushioning with predictable stability.
The shoe’s geometry has also changed. The sole has increased to 42.5 mm under the heel and 34.5 mm under the midfoot, placing the Wave Rider among the ranks of modern, highly cushioned training models. At the same time, Mizuno has lowered the drop to 8 millimeters – 2 millimeters less than in the previous generation.

These are some of the major new features: the Mizuno Wave plate. In previous generations, it primarily covered the rear portion of the sole, whereas in the Rider 30, it extends across nearly its entire length. Made of Pebax, the plate does not serve a propulsive function, unlike the carbon fiber used in racing shoes. Its purpose is to evenly distribute the forces generated during landing, improve stability, and support a smooth roll of the foot. Combined with the new sole construction, it is responsible for the Rider’s signature confident and predictable handling.
The result of all these changes is a shoe that retains the stability that is the hallmark of the series, while offering significantly more cushioning and comfort than its predecessors. Thanks to its higher sole and modern construction, the Wave Rider 30 should also perform well for heavier runners and during long training sessions, where previous generations were already pushing the limits of their capabilities.

Redesigned Outsole, Same Character
The Wave Rider 30’s outsole has also been subtly redesigned. It still uses durable X10 rubber in the areas most prone to wear, but its layout and quantity have been adjusted to reduce the overall construction weight without compromising durability. The outsole itself has retained its typical road-running character – its small, densely spaced lugs make good traction on road surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, or cobblestones.
This construction means that the Wave Rider 30 performs just as well on paved gravel roads in the suburbs and smooth forest trails as it does in the city. Of course, this isn’t an off-road model, but it offers sufficient traction during daily workouts off the road.

New Upper, Classic Sense of Security
The Wave Rider 30’s upper is made from a new material, 1BY1 Mesh, which replaces the material used in the previous generation. It’s a lightweight, technical mesh that makes for good ventilation and high comfort during longer workouts. The material is moderately stretchy but conforms well to the foot. It doesn’t feel too tight or too loose.
The width of the upper, however, may come as a surprise. Compared to the previous version, there’s definitely more room. If you have a medium-width or slightly wider foot and are looking for a shoe that makes optimal space available, the Rider 30 seems like a much better option than its predecessor. It also offers slightly more room for the foot than many of its competitors, such as the Brooks Ghost 18, Hoka Clifton 11, or Nike Vomero 18.
These are the Rider’s defining features: stability has been a hallmark for years, and this trait remains in the 30th generation – even though the high, soft sole doesn’t make this task any easier. Two elements are responsible for stability in the Rider: the heel counter, which is high and fairly stiff for a running shoe. Additionally, stability is made possible by a full-length Wave plate hidden in the midsole. Thanks to these two elements, the foot is stabilized both in the rear of the shoe and throughout the entire footstrike cycle.

Large Sole, Reasonable Weight
According to the producer’s data, the men’s version of the Wave Rider 30 weighs 265 grams, while the women’s version weighs 230 grams. In my size, US 12, it weighs 307 grams. These figures are practically identical to those of the previous generation, which is even more impressive when you consider the scale of the design changes. Mizuno has significantly increased the amount of cushioning, incorporated a full-length Wave plate, and raised the stack – all without increasing the shoe’s weight.
In practice, this means that the Wave Rider 30 remains one of the lighter models in the highly cushioned training shoe segment. It offers the comfort typical of much bulkier constructions while maintaining the lightness that has long been one of this series’ greatest strengths. If you’re looking for a shoe for daily training that combines plenty of cushioning with a reasonable weight, the Rider 30 definitely deserves your attention.

Summary
The Mizuno Wave Rider 30 is the most groundbreaking iteration of this series in many years. The Japanese brand has retained what has always been the Rider’s hallmark – stable and predictable foot guidance – but has combined it with a whole new level of cushioning. A larger outsole, two types of Enerzy NXT foam, and a full-length Wave plate elevate this model to a whole new level of comfort. The Wave Rider 30 isn’t just another evolution – it’s a new chapter in the history of these most highly regarded running series.
