Runner on The Bridge

Many beginner runners wonder what they need to start running. There is a common misconception that expensive equipment, professional clothing, and complicated training plans are necessary. Nothing could be further from the truth! Below is a list of items that are worth having and those that aren’t necessary at first.

You Don’t Need Expensive Shoes… But Don’t Run in Flip-Flops Either

You don’t need to buy the latest running shoes right away. At least, not right away. Don’t rush to the store thinking you can’t take your first steps without them. If you aren’t as heavy as a young bull, a simple, basic running shoe will suffice at first. Are you going to start running regularly? The time will come for better shoes – softer, more cushioned, and tailored to your needs. But for starters? Just go out for a run.

You Don’t Need a GPS Watch… But It Might Just Keep You Going

A smartwatch or professional running watch is a great training tool for runners, but it’s expensive. Additionally, when you first start running, you won’t need most of its features. Nevertheless, watching your progress can be very motivating. Seeing your progress motivates you to keep going. You can clearly see your progress and how your running form improves when you can run further or faster after a few weeks or months.

Furthermore, rather than buying an expensive watch, a smartwatch and a free app, such as Strava, are perfect for beginners. They measure time, distance, and basic parameters. If you want, you can share your progress with friends on social media. This provides additional motivation.

You Don’t Need Pro Running Gear… But Comfort Is Key

You don’t need the latest technical shirts and leggings. All you need is light, breathable clothing suitable for the weather. At first, you can even wear a regular T-shirt and sports shorts – comfort is what counts!

You Don’t Need a Complicated Plan… But Consistency Is Everything

No, you don’t need a personal trainer or a complicated training plan to start running. First, use your common sense so you don’t go from sitting at your desk to running 10 kilometers straight away. You also need the motivation to get started. Motivation to lose a few pounds. Motivation to finish a race. Everyone has their own reason for running.

Are you starting from scratch? Start by walking, and gradually increase the distance and intensity. Over time, you will no longer need walking breaks. If you’re starting with better fitness, Begin with two 30-minute workouts per week. Initially, focus more on the time you spend running than on the distance. There is no need to use advanced training plans right away. At first, it is enough to go out regularly and enjoy moving your body. Regularity is key.

You Don’t Need Too Much Info… But If You’re Lost, Just Ask

No, you don’t need to drown yourself in information. Don’t try to read every book on running or scour the entire internet before you take your first step. It’s a waste of time. Instead of analyzing every parameter – technique, pace, breathing, etc. – just go out and run.

You don’t need a Ph.D. in running to get started. All you need is the desire and a little common sense.
