Running Shoe Models Overview

adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2

adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2

The adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 is the lightest model in the entire lineup and the flagship running shoe of the adidas Adizero line, representing the highest level in adidas’ racing footwear segment. It is designed for long distance races such as marathons and half marathons. It features ultra-lightweight construction and advanced technologies, including Lightstrike PRO EVO foam and carbon fiber. These solutions make it exceptionally responsive, making it the perfect choice for experienced runners looking for maximum speed. It should be noted, however, that the lightness and performance of this model come at a high price and with a limited lifespan.

  • Drop: 6mm
  • Weight: 138g
  • Regular price: 500 EUR

adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4

adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4

The Adios Pro 4 is the second model of racing shoe from adidas. It is one of the most common carbon racing shoes in running competitions. The midsole is made of lightweight and resilient Lightstrike PRO foam and a carbon fork-shaped Energyrods element. Its function is similar to that of a full-size plate – it makes the shoe exceptionally dynamic. However, the shoe can feel a bit unstable at slower speeds. The outsole is made up of two rubber compounds – reliable and grippy Continental rubber and lightweight and translucent Lighttraxion, which provides grip on both dry and wet surfaces.

  • Stack height: 39/33mm
  • Drop: 6mm
  • Weight: 200g men’s, 175g women’s
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

The Asics Metaspeed is the fastest and most advanced racing shoe in the Asics lineup. It combines a full-length carbon fiber plate with highly resilient, lightweight foam for maximum cushioning and powerful energy return. The lightweight, breathable upper is nearly imperceptible on the foot, allowing the entire shoe to perform like a racing machine. The Metaspeed shows its full potential at fast speeds and is an excellent choice for advanced runners looking for a racing shoe for marathon distances. The model comes in two variants: Metaspeed Sky and Metaspeed Edge. The Edge has a carbon plate that is placed slightly closer to the ground at the front of the shoe, providing a slightly different running experience that suits various stride techniques.

  • Stack height: 39/34mm
  • Drop: 5mm
  • Weight: 183g
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Brooks Hyperion Elite 5

Brooks Hyperion Elite 5

Brooks’ proposal features the most responsive foam in the company’s history – DNA GOLD. Inside is a full-size carbon fiber plate. However, it is not a smooth plate, but a perforated one. Another distinguishing feature of this shoe is its unique design with cut-out holes and visible foam “capsules” that enhance foam compression and natural midsole deformation. These shoes are an excellent choice for races ranging from 5K to marathons.

  • Stack height: 40/32mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 198g
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Diadora Gara Carbon 3

Diadora Gara Carbon 3

The Diadora Gara Carbon 3 is the fastest running shoe in the Italian brand’s collection. Its key feature is a full-length carbon fiber plate that makes the shoe smooth and responsive. This plate is paired with lightweight, responsive ANIMA PBX foam that has been modified to deliver more energy return than the previous version. Importantly, the midsole is unusually wide and free of excessive grooves for a carbon racing shoe, providing good stability. A lightweight upper made of Matryx material provides support, durability, and breathability. Compared to some futuristic racing shoes, this is a fairly classic design, yet it’s still worth considering.

  • Stack height: 40/35mm
  • Drop: 5mm
  • Weight: 205g
  • Regular price: 300 EUR

Hoka Cielo X1 2.0

Hoka Cielo X1 2.0

The Cielo X1 2.0 is Hoka’s top racing shoe. It features a full-length carbon fiber plate with small wings and two layers of responsive PEBA foam. It is ideal for races ranging from 5K to marathon distance. Its main improvement is its weight; it is just as light as the other models in this guide. However, it can be unstable when running slowly with strong heel engagement – but who would want to run slowly in these?!

  • Stack height: 39/32mm
  • Drop: 7mm
  • Weight: 228g
  • Regular price: 275 EUR

Hoka Rocket X 3

Hoka Rocket X 3

The Hoka Rocket X is the brand’s second racing shoe. It is less futuristic than the Cielo but more stable and predictable. It is based on a responsive PEBA midsole and a full-length carbon fiber plate to enhance dynamic performance. It also features an ultra-light, single-layer mesh upper and a racing outsole. The Hoka Rocket X is a standout among fast carbon racing shoes. It’s a good choice if you want to break records and like to run fast.

  • Stack height: 40/33mm
  • Drop: 7mm
  • Weight: 208g
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Kiprun KD900X LD+

Kiprun KD900X LD+

The KD900X LD+ is a surprising proposition from the French brand Kiprun, which until now has mainly been associated with budget running shoes. This time, however, they take it to the next level and serve up a shoe that combines lightness, dynamic performance and record-breaking technology. At the heart of the construction is ultra-light and responsive VFoam Plus, with a full-length carbon fiber plate inside. In addition, the aggressively sculpted midsole provides a smooth rolling motion, and the numerous cutouts reduce weight, which only encourages the development of higher speeds.

  • Stack height: 39/35mm
  • Drop: 4mm
  • Weight: 238g men’s, 196g women’s
  • Regular price: 230 EUR

Mizuno Hyperwarp Pro

Mizuno Hyperwarp Pro

The Mizuno Hyperwarp Pro is part of Mizuno’s new line of racing shoes. It has a more classic design and less aggressive profile than the Rebellion Pro. It is also the most affordable model in the Hyperwarp series. It is an excellent entry-level option for runners looking to try shoes with a plate. Its construction is based on resilient Enerzy XP foam and a Wave plate made of a nylon blend with carbon fiber. This model performs best in races ranging from 5 kilometers to a full marathon. It is also suitable for fast tempo runs. It can also serve as a “super-training shoe” for those who are new to running in carbon-plated shoes.

  • Stack height: 39.5/33.5mm
  • Drop: 6mm
  • Weight: 200g
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Mizuno Rebbellion Pro 3

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3

The Rebellion Pro is probably the most aggressive race shoe in this comparison. These heavily rockered shoes are designed to roll the foot and push the foot forward. This dynamic may seem unnatural at first and takes some getting used to. The midsole is made of Enerzy Lite foam and a plate that is an evolution of the Wave system known from the brand’s training shoes. The plate in the Rebellion has a slight wave shape and is made of 30% carbon fiber and 70% nylon. This shoe is designed for fast, experienced and advanced runners. These shoes are not recommended for people looking for their first pair of carbon running shoes.

  • Stack height: 38/36.5mm
  • Drop: 4mm
  • Weight: 225g
  • Regular price: 240 EUR

New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5

New Balance Fuelcell Supercomp Elite v5

The New Balance FuelCell SC Elite v5 is the most technologically advanced racing shoe New Balance has ever made. Its midsole is made of improved FuelCell foam, which is made of PEBA material. Inside is a full-length carbon fiber plate. The plate is positioned in a way that leaves an empty channel running through the center of the shoe. This design enhances the foam’s flexibility and the plate’s performance. The shoe is distinguished by its pronounced midsole flex, which provides excellent cushioning and responsiveness.

  • Stack height: 40/32mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 215g
  • Regular price: 280 EUR

Nike Alphafly 3

Nike Alphafly 3 - mint

Nike’s most advanced race shoe. Featuring a full-length carbon plate and two additional gas cushions under the forefoot. The cushions provide incredible bounce, and in combination with the carbon fiber they provide the right amount of stiffness and dynamics. The whole thing is surrounded by a large amount of lightweight ZoomX foam. Compared to the Vaporfly, this is a more stable shoe that is also safer for runners who cannot maintain speeds below 4’00/km for long periods of time.

  • Stack height: 40/32mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 218g
  • Regular price: 310 EUR

Nike Vaporfly 4

Nike Vaporfly 4

One of the most popular racing shoe lines on the market. Featuring soft and responsive ZoomX foam and a full-length carbon fiber plate. Incredibly dynamic yet soft, the fourth edition has a slightly slimmer profile and less foam underfoot. These changes make it better suited for races from 5K to half-marathon. For years, it has been one of the lightest racing shoes you won’t feel on your feet.

  • Stack height: 35/28mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 190g men’s, 150g women’s
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

On Cloudboom Strike

On Cloudboom Strike

The Cloudboon Strike is the latest version of On’s fastest racing shoe. At first glance, it looks nothing like the brand’s typical model, and the distinctive “Cloud” system is barely noticeable. Inside, however, is a carbon speedboard and ultra-responsive Helion HF foam for a dynamic bounce. The lightweight, almost “paper-thin” 100% recycled polyester upper is also eye-catching, giving the shoe a modern and eco-friendly look.

  • Stack height: 39.5/35.5mm
  • Drop: 4mm
  • Weight: 215g men’s, 188g women’s
  • Regular price: 300 EUR

Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3

Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3

One of the most futuristic designs around. Featuring a midsole divided into two separate segments of responsive NITRO Elite, designed to work a little more independently (and reduce the weight of the shoe). Between them, like a bridge, is a full-length PWRPLATE carbon fiber plate. As a result, the carbon fiber in the midfoot is completely exposed. This is designed to increase leverage and provide even more rebound. In practice, this solution engages the foot and calf very strongly while running. This is a shoe for advanced runners and for shorter distances up to and including half marathons. As with the Rebellion, I do not recommend buying blind!

  • Stack height: 40/32mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 170g men’s, 147g women’s
  • Regular price: 270 EUR

Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

One of the more stable race shoes on this list. The second, next to the Metaspeed Sky+, is a shoe that I can recommend as the first carbon racing shoe. In the midsole we find SPEEDROLL, which is nothing more than a molding that helps the foot roll quickly. There is also an S-shaped carbon fiber plate to make it fast and dynamic. The PWRUN PB foam around the plate is based on a PeBa polymer blend that provides elasticity and cushioning. It is worth noting that, unlike many carbon running shoes, the foam here forms a relatively wide and stable base. This may not make it the fastest, but it makes it a little safer.

  • Stack height: 39/31mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 212g men’s, 185g women’s
  • Regular price: 250 EUR

Saucony Endorphin Elite 2

Saucony Endorphin Elite 2

If you are looking for uncompromising speed, the Endorphin Elite 2 is the shoe for you. A high technology shoe that can be compared to the Nike Alphafly Next%. The foam in this model is PWRRUN HG, which is characterized by greater hardness, contributing to greater energy return and elasticity. The plate here has a “fork” shape, which is supposed to make it more dynamic and even faster. This shoe is quite demanding, rather for the most advanced runners who want to fight for the most ambitious results.

  • Stack height: 39.5/31.5mm
  • Drop: 8mm
  • Weight: 199g
  • Regular price: 300 EUR
