Asics Gel-Nimbus 27 alternatives
A good alternative to this model are the most cushioned shoes from other brands, which are often referred to as “max-cushioned shoes” by runners. Designed for maximum comfort, these shoes provide exceptional softness and protection, especially on hard surfaces.

FF Blast+ foam cushioning
The most significant, albeit subtle, change is the two-millimeter increase in stack height. The Nimbus 27 now boasts an impressive 43.5 millimeters under the heel and 35.5 millimeters under the forefoot. These measurements place the Nimbus 27 among the thickest running shoes on the market. The increased height and volume, combined with exceptionally soft FF Blast+ ECO foam and PureGel in the midsole, provide maximum cushioning.

The Nimbus 27’s level of cushioning makes it the perfect choice for runners who cover many miles every day, as well as for those who need extra support due to their weight. In this respect, it is ideal for people weighing up to 100 kilograms. The Nimbus 27 reveals its greatest strengths during slow, easy training sessions and long runs, when comfort and joint protection matter most. In short, it is an ultra-comfortable “slipper” designed for steady paces and long-distance relaxation.
However, if you are looking for a dynamic shoe, this model is unlikely to meet your expectations. Although its midsole has a slightly rounded profile, it does not provide a rocking transition from heel to toe. There are also no carbon fiber elements. Just foam—lots of soft foam. A well-trained runner can pick up speed in it, but the Nimbus is synonymous with easy, comfortable running, not racing.

Hybridgrip outsole
As with the previous model, this one also has an Hybrid Asicsgrip outsole. Rubber covers most of the midsole, striking a balance between durability and lightness. Though the texture of the outsole seems flat at first glance, it is actually 1.8 mm deep. This makes for surprisingly good functionality. While not an aggressive pattern, it works perfectly for everyday use.
Designed for urban and suburban paved routes, the outsole offers solid grip on dry surfaces and slightly damp conditions.

The upper is definitely thinner
Apart from the increased stack height, the second significant change is the new, thinner knitted fabric upper. This material makes the shoe more breathable, addressing one of the most frequently mentioned drawbacks of the previous model. Now, the Nimbus will perform even better in high temperatures, especially in the summer.
The moderately flexible upper makes the inside feel spacious. At its widest point, the upper is 105 millimeters wide, which is 2 mm wider than the previous model. In practice, however, the interior feels more spacious, mainly due to the flexible material at the front of the shoe. This design provides a greater sense of freedom and additional comfort, making this model more comfortable overall.

The other elements of the upper are unsurprising. The tongue is thin and flexible, almost openwork. It appears to be the most delicate part of the entire design. It is integrated with the upper using a soft, flexible material that allows it to fit the foot perfectly and not shift sideways, ensuring stability and comfort.
The back of the shoe has a classic plastic wedge that stabilizes the heel and offers a secure grip while running. Around the ankle, the shoe is finished with a thin, subtly protruding “collar.” It does not adhere directly to the body, so it does not affect the shoe’s fit or performance. Below and inside the heel counter is a semi-circular sponge cushion that comfortably wraps around the heel bone. This feature is designed for comfort, which runners will certainly appreciate.

Weight at an average level
According to the manufacturer, the men’s shoe weighs 305 grams, and the women’s shoe weighs 265 grams. These weights are nearly identical to those of the previous model. For a shoe with such high-level cushioning, this weight can still be considered light.
In size 12 US, the Gel-Nimbus 27 weighs 351 grams, 10 grams more than its predecessor. This difference is likely due to the additional two millimeters of foam in the midsole, though it is imperceptible in practice. Since the 25th edition, the weight of this model has remained similar.
Compared to other shoes with a similar level of cushioning, the Nimbus ranks roughly in the middle of the pack. The current average in this category is 346 grams, meaning the Nimbus is only 5 grams heavier. This is precisely what you would expect from a shoe that offers maximum comfort while running.

Summary
The Asics Gel-Nimbus 27 is a natural progression from the previous two editions, with minor improvements. The first improvement is increased cushioning, thanks to an additional layer of foam. In practice, this change is insignificant; the shoe remains a soft, comfortable “slipper” ideal for everyday running. The second improvement is a new, thinner upper that addresses complaints about the thickness of the previous model. Consequently, the shoe performs better in warmer conditions. Additionally, the Nimbus 27 retains all its flagship features — it is soft and comfortable, and is designed for easy long-distance running.
