If your training involves a 50/50 mix of surfaces, this shoe is simply the perfect fit.

Pros

- performs well on both gravel and hard surface
- secure foot grip
Cons
- the outsole works well on gravel, but it will be too delicate on technical mountain trails..
Salomon Running Shoes – lineup
Salomon’s selection of shoes for hard surfaces is limited, but targeted. The Aero Glide line is the most cushioned running series in the brand’s catalog. This series includes the classic Aero Glide asphalt model and its gravel variant, the Aero Glide GRVL, which is designed for gravel surfaces. Another option is the Aero Blaze GRVL, which has a similar design but significantly less cushioning and a slightly more dynamic character. Both GRVL models are best suited for gravel and light trails. They can also handle asphalt runs when you first have to “run through the city” to get to forest roads.

Similar to Salomon Aero Glide 3 GRVL
The gravel shoe market is still in its infancy. They bridge the gap between classic hard surfaces and trails. Alternatives to the Aero Glide GRVL are primarily versatile trail shoes best suited for gravel roads, forest trails and gentle paths. They are also suitable for running half on hard surfaces and half off-road. However, they are too delicate for technical mountain trails, as they lack aggressive traction and solid foot protection.

Cushioning and Comfort – Energy Foam EVO
The Aero Glide 3’s midsole is made of a single piece of Energy Foam EVO, a soft foam that absorbs shock well. Compared to the previous two versions of the Aero Glide, the difference in comfort is enormous. The shoe insulates the foot well from the ground, provides high cushioning and maintains controlled stiffness. These features make it suitable for heavier runners, including those weighing over 90kg, as well as long-distance runners, including marathon runners. It is an excellent option for gravel running for virtually any runner.

As one would expect from a shoe with such high-level cushioning, there is a lot of foam. There are 40mm under the heel and 32mm under the forefoot, both of which are well above the market average. More foam provides more protection with every step. The slightly widened midsole at the back and front improves stability. Despite its height, the shoe remains stable on uneven gravel and hardened forest roads.
Despite all this softness, some dynamic has been retained. This is thanks to the subtle contouring of the Reverse Camber. The midsole’s subtle rounding facilitates a smooth roll of the foot from heel to toe. It provides a slight push forward. This helps with both an easy run and a faster pace. The moderate profile does not impose anything. It provides gentle support without interfering, and some runners won’t even consciously feel it.

Gravel Contagrip Outsole – Grip on Gravel and Light Trail
The Salomon Aero Glide 3 GRVL’s outsole is made of a gravel-specific version of the Contagrip compound. Its character is clearly a compromise. On the one hand, the surface is relatively smooth and hard, improving durability on hard surfaces like asphalt. On the other hand, it has a texture with a depth of approximately 2.3mm, which provides traction outside the city. The fine tread pattern and moderate tread height make it most comfortable on gravel roads, forest trails and easy, non-technical trails. This outsole is designed for smooth running, not battling roots and rocks.

Fit and Control – 3D Upper with EndoFit & SensiFit
The upper is made of moderate-density, seamless 3D mesh. This is standard for running shoes in this category. The material is breathable and fits the foot well. There is optimal space in the toe area. Your toes won’t be squeezed, nor will they have too much space. Comfort remains high over longer distances. The sizing is consistent with other running models – the length of the Aero Glide insole is what we would expect.
The midfoot area provides a more secure hold. This is achieved on the outside by EndoFit reinforcements and on the inside by the SensiFit system. These stiffer elements extend beyond the visible surface; some are hidden inside the upper, providing a subtle yet effective fit. Together, they provide stability and a secure fit while running. Compared to the fairly spacious forefoot area, the midfoot area is snug, providing a sense of control.

A classic solution has been used in the back. Inside the heel counter is a wedge-shaped clip that limits excessive ankle pronation. The moderately high heel counter fits most runners. It is surrounded by soft foam for a comfortable and secure heel hold. This design is similar to that of the Asphalt Aero Glide 3, and the Gravel version brings this urban comfort to gravel and light trail paths.
Perfectly Balanced Weight
According to the manufacturer’s data, the average weight of a men’s shoe is 275grams while the average weight of a women’s shoe is 235grams. These are reference sizes, of course – approximately size 42 for men and size 36 for women. For size 12US shoes, the average weight is 337grams, which is above average for all running shoes, both road and trail. However, when compared only with trail models, the shoe weighs exactly 1gram less than the current average of 338grams for all trail shoes. This shows that, despite its high cushioning, the shoe is not overly heavy for its category.

Final Thoughts
The Salomon Aero Glide 3 GRVL is a successful design that runners need. This versatile gravel shoe combines a soft, highly cushioned midsole with a secure grip and stable footing on light terrain. It performs well on gravel roads, forest trails and asphalt. It’s an excellent choice for runners looking for one pair of shoes for mixed surfaces without compromising cushioning or dynamics.
