Running Shoes

Running shoes are a runner’s basic equipment. It is often said that you can save on clothing and other accessories, but not on shoes. It pays to know which running shoes to choose. Training shoes for easy everyday running, trail shoes for off-road running, or racing shoes for fast training sessions and competitions.

Diadora Nucleo is back in its second edition. It still has that something that makes running around town a pleasure – only now it’s version 2.0. Comfort? Check. Dynamics? Not bad. Fun? Even more so. The Nucleo 2 is a soft companion for everyday runs, but it can also pick up the pace when needed. In short: if you liked the first version, you should like this one even more.

The fourth edition of Endorphin Pro is another improvement of this carbon starter. It is also a real change in what we get inside. The midsole now features not one but a combination of two foams: PWRRUN PB and PWRRUN HG. Changes have also been made to the upper, which has been slightly redesigned. This translates into a distinctly different feel when running. It’s still fast, but now with a little more comfort. Is it still a record-breaking shoe? Yes. Especially when it comes to distances from 5K to half marathons.

A brand associated with good but rather budget shoes and a full-fledged carbon boot? It’s like Dacia and a sports car. However, the Kiprun KD900X LD+ is a full-fledged competitor that stands in line with the elite. Lightweight foam, carbon fiber, a low-profile upper and, above all, a whole lot of dynamite underfoot. And all this for less than a grand. Sound like a cheap thrill? Well, not exactly, because on closer inspection, this is a shoe that is just as good as the rest in its class.

The Brooks Caldera 8 is for those who want maximum cushioning on the trail without losing control of the terrain. A large amount of DNA LOFT v3 foam, a new midsole geometry and refined stabilization make the Caldera a strong candidate for an ultra shoe, especially when the course is long, varied and technical. This is not a shoe for fast running, but if you are looking for comfort over both short and long distances, it is worth a closer look.

The Cascadia 18 is the next iteration of Brooks’ iconic trail shoe, which has balanced cushioning and stability for years. This version features a modified Trail Adapt platform with independently functioning midsole elements designed to better adapt to different surfaces. It also features lightweight DNA Loft v2 foam, a fairly aggressive outsole, and a roomy upper that allows for a lot of freedom of movement. On paper, it looks like the perfect companion for running on difficult terrain. But how does it perform in the real world?

Light as a feather, sleek as a bullet-that’s the latest Nike Vaporfly 4. This model isn’t a revolution, but rather a precise cut with a scalpel. A little less foam, a little more pep. Instead of a pure marathon shoe, we have a rocket that works best for shorter distances. Five kilometers? Ten kilometers? Half marathon? It will feel like a walk in the park. Marathon? Also, but Nike is increasingly emphasizing that the Alphafly model is intended for the longest races. What will we find in its lighter brother?

Running shoes are full of new and different designs. But the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 is even better. It has two foam blocks in its sole. The carbon fiber plate is like a bridge between them. At the back of the shoe, there’s a fin-like protrusion, and at the front, the outsole extends. The result? It’s an intriguing and fast shoe, but it’s not for beginners.

Diadora Frequenza 2 are shoes that combine Italian style with running comfort. But that’s not all. They are also shoes that combine lightness with dynamic rebound. You won’t find carbon here, but that’s its advantage – more natural and safer performance. Although it has a lot of dynamics, it can also be a great shoe for everyday running. That is, if you prefer lighter and more resilient constructions.

New Balance has proven for years that it can make shoes that pamper runners’ feet. The Fresh Foam More v5 is the next step in maximum comfort and cushioning. A thick layer of Fresh Foam X foam, a wide platform and a secure construction make this a shoe that can compete with the best “hovercrafts” on the market. Still not enough? The price is also worth mentioning, as this is one of the cheapest maximum cushioning trainers on the market.

Can Italian elegance go hand in hand with carbon wildness? Diadora says yes! The Gara Carbon 2 is a shoe that combines a large dose of racing madness with lightness, responsiveness and safety. It is a shoe that can be a demon of speed, but also a guardian angel, especially during long distance races like marathons or half marathons. Can it compete with the giants of the running market? In my opinion, yes, it can!

The Asics Gel-Cumulus 27 is not revolutionary – it is still a familiar construction. The shoe is designed for everyday urban running at a moderate pace. It offers the same comfortable level of cushioning, solid stability and relatively low weight. The list of pros remains the same, as does the list of cons. The biggest drawback is still the outsole, which is not necessarily the most durable.

I wrote about its predecessor that it was a premium training shoe because the Vomero line had returned to its former glory. The Nike Vomero 18 continues that tradition, but in an even better version – the shoe is 7mm taller, which comes as no surprise. It has gained a little more cushioning while maintaining its softness, comfort and feel. Initial feedback suggests that the upper could be more breathable and the whole shoe lighter, but it is still a very good training shoe at a reasonable price.

The Diadora Atomo Star is a cushioned running shoe. This year they have become even softer – nitrogen infused foam makes them softer than ever before. It is also worth mentioning their unique origin – made from start to finish in Northern Italy, they stand out from mass production. Among Diadora shoes? Number one. Is it worth it? If you dream of running on clouds, yes.

The new version of Hoka’s carbon starter shoe features a lighter construction, resilient PEBA foam, and a dynamic carbon plate that combine to create a record-breaking machine. However, the minimalist EcoKnit upper and slim shape make this a shoe focused on speed rather than stability. The narrow platform and aggressive geometry may be challenging for less advanced runners. But for those who can handle it, the Hoka Cielo X1 2.0 will reward you with excellent rebound and dynamics.
